Turning an Adult

Last week I turned 18! I definitely have had many emotions as I officially turn into an “adult”. These past few years I haven’t had some of the freedoms of an adult. I still have not been able to get my driver’s license which is definitely the hardest part. I get asked almost on a daily basis “how is it to have your license?” This question gives me pause and reminds me of what I have been through. It is not easy being the only senior in my class without a driver’s license. Although this is an extremely hard concept to still wrap my head around I am fortunate to have many other experiences.

18 has opened the door to other opportunities in which I am now able to participate. Yesterday I had the opportunity to vote, which is an important part of adulthood. If you are 18 or older- get out and VOTE!! Every election and every vote counts! On my birthday I was able to buy a scratch ticket although that may not be considered a huge freedom, it was to me.

Here are some other things I am not now able to do since I am 18:

  • Buy a pet

  • Set up an Uber/Lyft account

  • Sign myself out of High school

  • Buy Fireworks (or sparklers!)

  • Get called for jury duty

  • Apply for a credit card

  • Bet on a racehorse

  • Skydive

  • Get a piercing

  • Get a tattoo

  • Open a checking or savings account

  • Become an organ donor

  • Work in a restaurant and serve drinks

So in turning 18, I finally get to participate in many other activities that make me feel like an adult! Even though I am technically an adult I will forever be a little girl at heart.
